Felicity Mara: Before Summer Rain, Projects Twenty Two, 4 July - 6 August 2025.
Projects Twenty Two is pleased to present Before Summer Rain, an exhibition of new paintings by Felicity Mara. At the centre of the show are two large diptychs, Just Before and The Alchemist’s Garden, from an ongoing series. They are accompanied by other recent large-scale canvases and a number of smaller works. In these paintings, the intensity and constant state of change in the sea-light and weather patterns around Felicity’s Porthmeor studio inform a profoundly lyrical interpretation of the relationship between artist and environment.
Curator Matt Retallick writes: 'Every canvas is like a visual poem, each a single page, bound not by thread but by the unbroken continuity of motion that extends from one to the next, weaving an ever-evolving narrative, each part a fragment of a single script. When Felicity speaks of calligraphy, this comes into focus, in describing her mark-making as a form of notation, where each sweep of the brush and every pigment stain extends from a moment, an encounter. Calligraphy gives form to thought, and is defined by intent, grace, and balance. Her work is a continual act of balancing opposites; a painting completes itself when true harmony is found … Her paintings inhabit a liminal space, between movement and stillness, past and present, thought and feeling, and through them you are drawn into the very heart.'
The exhibition is accompanied by a limited-edition publication in 100 signed and numbered copies, containing 14 colour images and the full text of Matt Retallick’s essay.
