Jack Eden: WALL WORK, Noordereiland, Rotterdam, 12th April - 21st June 2025.
In his first solo exhibition in the Netherlands, Rotterdam-based sculptor Jack Eden invites us into a personal, domestic space to experience WALL WORK. Offering a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into his creative process, it features sculptures, maquettes, drawings, photographs, printed materials, calculations and mistakes.
While Eden’s work often explores grand themes, WALL WORK creates fresh dialogues between the artwork and the viewer. Displaying the pieces in an intimate setting, surrounded by everyday objects, adds an extra layer of vulnerability. The exhibition reflects on the contrast between the privacy of an artist’s studio and the public nature of exhibitions, playing with the tension between these two spaces.
The exhibition features a selection of mostly two-dimensional works. Jack is drawn to the sculptural potential of flat surfaces and the way a 'framework' can shape both the form and meaning of a piece. While his works often begin as three-dimensional, they are typically shared through photographs, deliberately flattened to question whether an artwork can retain its value without its physical presence. The hang of WALL WORK builds on this idea, using a domestic setting to challenge how we experience and value sculpture, by embracing the interruptions and imperfections of a non-professional space.
Curated by Dr. Matt Retallick, WALL WORK is open by appointment from 12 April to 21 June 2025 at a private home on Noordereiland, Rotterdam. To book a viewing or for more information, please email the artist at: jackedenart@gmail.com.
