Sturmflöten: Karl Weschke, a German in Cornwall - a lecture held at the Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlin, 28th May 2026.
In this lecture, Dr Matt Retallick explores the hidden connections between German and Cornish art through the life and work of the Gera-born painter Karl Weschke. Drawing on research from his doctoral thesis and his forthcoming monograph on the artist, Matt traces how Weschke became a conduit through which artists such as Georg Kolbe, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Lovis Corinth, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Barlach, Max Liebermann, and others, had an unexpected presence within Cornish art history.
Dr Matt Retallick is a London-based art historian and curator. He is co-lead of the Anglo-German Research Group, is a Senior Lecturer in Art History and Curating at Manchester Metropolitan University and is currently researching Georg Kolbe’s links to Britain. His talk is part of the lecture series From the Margins. Rediscovered Lives from Archives.
